Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS)
Mission and Objectives
The catechesis of the Good Shepherd is a program for children age 3 to 12. The children are invited to an encounter with God and form an authentic and faithful relationship with Him.
The catechesis is grounded in scriptural and liturgical study. Its approach is based on Montessori’s principles of education. Children hear the Gospel and work with materials that help them to discover the essential message of the proclamation.
The Catechist
The catechist is not the teacher. Her/his role is to prepare the environment which allows the child to enter into the mystery of God and respond to His invitation to relation through Jesus, the Good Shepherd.
The only Teacher is Christ who instructs both the adult and the child through the Word and the Holy Spirit.
The Atrium
The prepared environment is called the Atrium; it is not a classroom for instruction but a place for prayer and meditation. It is Holy Ground where the adult and child encounter Christ in words and deeds. It is designed to reflect the beauty of God’s creation and God’s abiding love.
The Work
The Work of each Child in the atrium is either a prayer or a passage to prayer. Finally, Christ invites us to become like children and journey deep into the heart of our God with the children.
